American Diabetes Association and The RESET Team to Hold Richmond Area SHRINK-A-Thon™

The goal: To help Richmonders lose 1200 pounds in 12 weeks
while raising $12,000 for the American Diabetes Association
and 500 pounds of food for the Central Virginia Food Bank.

Richmond, VA September 29, 2009 – The RESET Team, a group of health and wellness professionals based in Richmond, VA, has announced they will be holding a SHRINK-a-thon™, with the goal of helping area residents collectively lose 1200 pounds in 12 weeks. And, while they are “shrinking” the participants will be raising $12,000 for the American Diabetes Association, Central Virginia and collecting 300 pounds of food for the Central Virginia Foodbank. Similar to a walk-a-thon, participants will invite sponsors to pledge between $1 and $3 per pound or inch they lose in the 12-week competition.

Beginning October 7th through January 2010, many people will be getting fit and converting their excess weight to cash for the Central Virginia office of the American Diabetes Association. They will also be clearing their cupboards of unwanted food and donating it to the Central Virginia Foodbank.

Led by Team Captains, participants will meet in teams of 10-20 for 12 weeks. These meetings will be held at the Ukrops Crossridge Store, 10250 Staples Mill Road; Glen Allen, Virginia 23060 from 6:30 – 8:30 each Wednesday night. They will receive training from professional weight loss coaches on healthier eating habits, lifestyle changes, exercise, nutritional supplementation, weight loss and the four legs of success that contribute to long-term, permanent weight loss.

“We’re grateful for food drives like this that help us to meet the hunger needs in our community,” says Fay Lohr of the Central Virginia Foodbank, “and with the community’s support, we can provide even more of our neighbors with the adequate nutrition and healthy food they need to thrive.”

Using a weight loss curriculum modeled after two clinical trials done under the guidelines of the FDA and the Western Review Board, participants have an opportunity to not only shed unwanted pounds but also are expected to see blood levels for triglycerides, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and insulin sensitivity improve, as was the experience in those clinical trials.

“A program like this has the potential to help reverse the diabetes epidemic in our community”, said Elisabeth King, Associate Director, American Diabetes Association, Central Virginia.
