postheadericon FREE Foundation Richmond Chapter Ribbon Cutting on December 16th

Health Matters - Medical

The Foundation for Rehabilitation Equipment & Endowment (The FREE Foundation) announced today that it is officially expanding to serve the Richmond metropolitan area with the formation of the FREE of Richmond Chapter.  FREE helps those in need to find independence and improve their quality of life by providing them with free mobility related rehabilitation equipment.  FREE gifts equipment, including walkers; canes; wheelchairs; power chairs; scooters; bedside commodes; shower chairs; tub benches; hospital beds; and other mobility devices to adults in need and at risk in communities around Virginia.

The new chapter will be opened on Thursday, December 16, 2010, at 10am, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at its new office at 6301 Midlothian Turnpike, housed in the Goodwill of Central Virginia facility there.

Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services Commissioner Jim Rothrock will cut the ribbon and Virginia Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Keith Hare will present remarks on behalf of Governor Bob McDonnell and join the founder of FREE, Dr. Bruce Stelmack, in presenting the chapter’s first official equipment gift.

The equipment gifted by FREE reduces falls and resulting emergency room visits, hospital stays and the need to move to higher levels of care.  This means that for every dollar invested in FREE, over $30 in savings is returned to the communities served by FREE.

Gently used mobility rehabilitation equipment may be donated to FREE of Richmond at any Richmond area Goodwill store or donation center, including their facility at 6301 Midlothian Turnpike.  FREE of Richmond is supported by a grant from the VCU Department of Occupational Therapy and by operations space donated by Goodwill of Central Virginia.

FREE is part of the Virginia Reuse Network (VRN) which includes the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS): Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS) and Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center (WWRC); and an informal network comprised of various human services agencies, medical facilities, churches and other similar organizations.

FREE is seeking volunteers to join the Richmond chapter.  No particular expertise is required to make a valuable contribution.  More information on The FREE Foundation can be found at www.free-foundation.org.
