V Community News - Community Services

In celebration of the re-opening of the Carpenter Theatre and CenterStage, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra League is presenting its first “Walk for the Symphony” through downtown Richmond. Walkers will begin their walk at CenterStage, travel up Grace Street to Allen Avenue, and then proceed down Monument Avenue back to CenterStage.

The 5K Walk will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009 with check-in beginning at 8 AM. Teams of 10 or more are being formed with each walker paying a registration fee of $20. Event organizers have set a goal of 3,000 walkers. Everyone can participate as walkers will walk at their own pace.

Leading the Walk will be Associate Director of the Richmond Symphony, Erin Freeman, who will be joined by some members of the Richmond Symphony and the Richmond Symphony Chorus.

As an extra benefit, walkers will have an opportunity to visit the new CenterStage following the Walk. Celebrate bringing the Symphony back downtown by joining the Walk to support your Richmond Symphony. Form a team or sign up individually.

For registration forms and additional visit the League website at www.rsol.org.

The Success Center Provides the Space and Opportunity to Help People Build Their Dreams

A unique concept has been born in the heart of Jackson Ward.

Although in operation since April 2009, The Success Center, a coworking facility, officially opened on June 15, 2009 with its Grand Opening/Networking event. Over 20 business owners were in attendance to network and help celebrate the occasion. This idea was conceptualized by Camille Appleton-Greene, and although the idea of shared, community workspace is not a new one, it is a novel one in the Richmond area.

Work It, Girl! - Profiles
Mindy Grizzard’s weekday mornings are similar to many other Richmond women—she wakes up in her apartment and commutes to the city for another day of work. At the office she pours herself a cup of coffee and opens the paper. Instead of browsing the Flair section perhaps for familiar new engagements, or the Sports section to see how local teams are faring, she goes straight to the Metro section. Mindy begins each day scouring for the latest murders, looking to see which of her clients have been killed, and consequently which cases can be closed.
