Increase Productivity by Staying Clutter-Free
When I recently reflected back on the 11+ years that I have been working full-time as a professional organizer and the two to three years that I have been writing regularly about my organizing experiences and lessons I’ve learned, I realized that there are two areas of the organizing process that I enjoy most: clutter clearing and helping people get things done.
I am both very sensitive to energy and visually oriented, therefore I am very affected by the negative effects of clutter. And, I’m a task-oriented person. I like to get things done, finished, settled, decided. So, it makes sense that clutter clearing and getting things done would be my primary areas of interest.
After I pinpointed my primary organizing interests I began to think about the connection between clutter clearing and getting things done. Here are some of my thoughts:

Some people are genetically predisposed to gain weight, store weight and resist weight loss. A recent survey of physicians found that 99 percent agree that a person's genes influence his or her ability to lose or manage weight. In fact, more than half (55 percent) would make recommendations about a diet plan based primarily on a patient's genetics.

The ROC to Provide Over 2,000 Inner-City Children with Free Backpacks Filled with School Supplies
Richmond, Virginia – On August 27, 2011, The Richmond Outreach Center (The ROC) will supply over 2,000 inner-city children, ages 5-12, with free backpacks filled with school supplies at their Annual Back-to-School Rally.
Along with receiving these basic necessities that inner-city families would normally not have the finances to purchase, children who attend will also learn valuable life lessons to equip them for a successful school year, such as the importance of abiding by rules and guidelines, respecting authority figures, and getting along with peers.
Where Are We?

Driving home to Virginia from South Carolina with our six-year-old exhilarated granddaughter in tow. For nearly three months she had been marking days off the calendar anticipating her visit with us in Virginia. Getting into the truck she was ready to be in our home, yet we had a seven to eight hour drive ahead of us. Every ten minutes she asked where are we and how long until we get there. Even though she thinks Florida is just a trip across town, somehow she knew that when we left North Carolina we would be in Virginia. True we would be in Virginia, but still almost two hours away from our home. Hoping to avoid an already over-excited little girl from launching into a Mardi Gras celebration in the back seat of the truck, my husband and I secretly agreed to tell her we were in Virginia about a half-hour from our home rather than at the state line.
However, just by chance she saw the “Welcome to Virginia” sign beside the road. Somehow we convinced her that we were just outside of Virginia, North Carolina. Whew, we dodged that bullet, until ten minutes later when she asked what state we where in. Without hesitation my husband said, “the State of Confusion, and it will be a while before we are in Virginia.” Satisfied with that answer she settled back to play with Graffy, her stuffed Giraffe. We, of course, quietly snickered.
How many times do you feel like you are driving through the State of Confusion? It feels like a never ending drive to nowhere. What if we are already where we want to be but just have not recognized yet? What if you just sat back settled in played with Graffy for a bit? You would actually not only enjoy the ride, but realize you are exactly where you are meant to be.

Want More Energy? Clear Clutter!

Clutter Blocks Your Energy
Yesterday I had the honor of helping a lovely twelve year old girl, “Anna”, clear clutter from her bedroom. You may be thinking, “What’s the big deal? Why is that an honor?” It’s an honor because she welcomed me into her personal space and gave me permission to guide her in her decision-making. When I help people clear clutter, the energies in their lives shift and change for the better. It was an honor to be on that journey with her.
As we began working, Anna was reserved and somewhat aloof with me. That behavior is very common when I first begin clutter clearing with new clients. It was especially reasonable for a child working with an adult she hardly knew.
The way I work is to ask questions about the items in the room, starting with the biggest and moving on to the smallest. As we moved through that process it was fascinating to observe Anna morph from a self-contained soul sitting curled up in a little ball on her bed, answering my questions in a perfunctory manner, into an excited young colt bounding around the room gathering up items to evaluate and discard. Her shift from no energy to boundless energy was impressive.
I can’t remember the specific moment when Anna’s energy shifted. However, I have a hunch that it happened when we moved a small dresser from her closet to make more room for her to work in her closet. The dresser was a significant block to her being able to easily access her clothes and put them away. Moving it seemed to move Anna energetically from an overwhelmed, discouraged child into an enthusiastic young woman. From then on she worked with me with gusto, speed and focus. It was such a pleasure to be in that process with her. My challenge at that point was to contain her enthusiasm so we didn’t get ahead of ourselves in the clearing process.
