Remember the classic chick flick of the 70s, Terms of Endearment? The relationship between Aurora Greenway (Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter Emma (Debra Winger) was established early on in the movie when Aurora climbed into her sleeping daughter's crib, just to make sure that her baby was still breathing. As a new mother myself at the time, I could fully relate.
The maternal desire to guard her child's safety is fierce - and even expected. The women in this month's issue of V Magazine for Women extend that passion beyond their own homes and into their communities. "Cover girl" Jennifer Smith Love protects the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia in her role as Special Agent in Charge of the Richmond Region of the FBI. Mindy Grizzard works with some of the area's toughest criminals - gang members - with her ultimate goal being the safety of law-abiding citizens. The passionate people at Safe Harbor work to help those who need protection from close danger, and V tells the story of one victim who has found protection, assistance, and healing.
Also in this month's issue, local writer Shela Dean shares an insightful story about a hairy issue that often springs up in relationships, and N.E.W. member and fan LuEllen Buhrman tells about Network of Enterprising Women.
