Vintage Blood and the Sacred Scepters, by A.B. Wallace
Review by Brenda Seward, Simple Pleasures
The world of paranormal fiction has exploded into the mainstream over the last several years. Long gone are the days when this sort of book resided on the literary fringe as a kind of “pulp” fiction. It is extremely hard to find a best sellers list that does not include at least one title of this genre.
Of course, the double-edge sword of popularity can also be predictability. Thankfully, that is a pitfall A.B. Wallace managed to avoid in Vintage Blood and the Sacred Scepters. While Wallace’s main character, Brit Chambers, shares a few traits with other popular characters of this genre, neither the story nor the characters are predictable or copycat. She brings a fresh voice and a new spin in this engaging and suspenseful supernatural tale.
Brit Chambers, the main character, is a were-creature consultant by profession. She provides advice and assistance to all manner of were-animals in their day-to-day lives. She also has personal connections to the were-community and it is through this connection that her life becomes complicated. Quite unexpectedly, Brit becomes the personal possession of their leader, Lord Daison. During this unexpected and unwelcome turn in her life, Brit also finds herself embroiled in a quest to save the existence of those who are responsible for her current predicament. Faced with a multitude of personal and professional challenges, the character of Brit Chambers shines. She is strong and capable with a firm sense of self in the midst of some unusual and daunting challenges.
Filled with interesting twists and turns and a wonderfully engaging cast of characters, Vintage Blood and the Sacred Scepters will find fans among both paranormal readers and those who are merely looking for something a little different.
