V Community News - Community Activism

Are you a talented artist who is a survivor of sexual violence?
Do you want to contribute a piece to a statewide public awareness effort?

The VIrginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance, a statewide non-profit dedicated to stopping sexual and domestic violence, coordinates The Art of Surviving, an exhibit of artwork and poetry designed to enhance the publics understanding of sexual violence.  Launched in 2007, The Art of Surviving, has been exhibited in public libraries, art galleries, businesses, and college campuses across Virginia.

We collect art and poetry from survivors who would like to participate in the exhibit.  Two-dimensial pieces, such as paintings, charcoals, drawings, poetry, collages, and any other media that can be framed are all eligible.

The exhibit is meant to raise awareness about the prevelance and scope of sexual violence, its effects, and the healing process in moving from victim to survivor.  Visions of a world without sexual violence (and how we can achieve that) are also encouraged.  You must be at least 18 years old (you are welcome to send artwork that you made when you were younger than 18) and live in Virginia in order to sumit a piece to be considered for the exhibit.
