We’re not famous dogs. We don’t do sitcoms or star in movies. You won’t see our ‘smiling’ faces on a box of dog treats. We’re not fancy dogs. We’ll never be carried in tiny purses by celebrities or paraded around a show ring.

We’re just dogs. Dogs that were expendable. Dogs that had been given up and left behind by families that we had loved. We were forgotten, abandoned, and alone. Some of us were lost, some of us were abused, and some of us were in need of medical care.

But today we’re dogs that are number one!

Thanks to the Animal Rescue Site and PetFinder.com’s ‘Shelter + Challenge,’ Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, Inc, was voted First in Virginia – Winning a $1,000 grant – not only that, but VGSR placed 20th in the nation out of over 11,000 competing rescue and shelter organizations nationwide.

We could not have garnered such a prize without the dedication of worldwide supporters who voted for Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, Inc. Their time and effort paid off in more than monetary value. It helped to make more people aware of the epidemic financial crisis that animal rescue groups and shelters face every day.

While we are glad to have one this honor, Virginia German Shepherd Rescue is still in desperate need of donors, sponsors, and volunteers to foster dogs, provide transportation and support our adoption program. The cost of bringing one female into Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, Inc. is approximately $640 after shots, exam, spay and first month of flea and heartworm preventatives, and microchipping. Our adoption donation request is $250. We must make up that difference through fund raising and donations. The dogs under our care are fostered in homes with our volunteers, not in kennels. Dogs are fed, taken to the vet, cared for as if they were our own pets. We work diligently to rehabilitate, nurse back to health, re-train and above all else, love our fosters. Our goal is to find a caring, permanent home for these dogs. Dogs that will repay your every kindness with unconditional love for the rest of their lives.

Our next event is the Second Annual VGSR Golf Tournament, Friday, October 9th, 2009 at the spectacular Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club, Front Royal, Virginia. Sponsors and players are being sought for this event right now! Through your contributions, we will be able to save many more great dogs by being able to rescue, rehabilitate and get them adopted into good homes. There is a fantastic prize package offered to golfers for this year's tournament, a $50,000 (50/50)! Registration entry fee covers green fees, cart, favors, prizes, par busters, mulligans, and dinner. Virginia German Shepherd Rescue, Inc is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, 100% volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of the German Shepherd Dog.
