Social Security Debated

At Richmond's Controversy Club

Is Social Security really secure? Is it right? Hear speakers on both side of the debate, and have the opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns, to express your point of view.

The Controversy Club, at The Place at Innsbrook Shoppes, is an open format, non-partisan, pro and con dialogue about the leading issues that confront us as American citizens, reinvigorating civil public discourse regarding topics that impact our everyday lives. The speakers understand that their focus is to be on the underlying principles that their ideas are based on, the facts that give rise to them, and their implications to our lives. The Controversy Club's focus is on bringing clarity to the facts, seeing them in light of the principles.

The June debate is the third event, following the May debate on business bailouts and April debate on healthcare. The speakers tackling the pros and cons of Social Security are Bill Kallio, State Director of Virginia AARP, and Sidney Gunst, Jr., Innsbrook Corporate Center Visionary and Entrepreneur.

Bill Kallio has served as AARP’s State Director for Virginia since 1995. He oversees AARP’s program, community service and advocacy activities within the state. He has been with AARP for 22 years. Prior to coming to AARP, he was the Executive Director of a Washington based national religious coalition addressing social policy issues in the United States, South Africa and Central America. In addition to his AARP responsibilities, Bill serves as a member of the board of directors for the Virginia Coalition for the Aging, the steering committee of the Healthcare For All Virginians Coalition, the Futures Board of the Center on Aging at Virginia Tech and Chairperson of the Board of the Virginia Health Quality Center.

Sidney Gunst is a commercial real estate developer and entrepreneur from Richmond, Virginia.  He is best known in Central Virginia as the developer of the Innsbrook Corporate Center, a project he conceived when he was 28 years old. Mr. Gunst has served on Richmond area Boards, including Venture Richmond, the University of Richmond School of Continuing Studies, Elk Hill Farm (school for troubled youth), and the Innsbrook Owners’ Association.  He has also worked with a non-profit think tank, the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights, in Washington, D.C. on policy issues related to the advocacy of individual rights, private property, free-markets, and the rule of objective law.

June's Controversy Club debate on Social Security will be at The Place at Innsbrook Shoppes, 4036-C Cox Road, Glen Allen VA, at the Cox Road & Broad Street entrance to Innsbrook on Tuesday, June 15. Doors open at 6pm; debate from 6:30-8. The event is free and open to the public.
