"Got You Covered" Clothing Event

"Got You Covered", presented by The Giving Heart, is a clothing and accessory distribution to families and individuals in need.   Special emphasis is on work-related clothing that allows many of our recipients to exude the confidence they have in becoming and remaining gainfully employed.

In addition, we offer assistance in providing clothing for infants, children and teens - allowing them to be clothed in nice (and current) fashion trends.  Teens, in particular, appreciate being able to blend in with peers!

How to Donate

1.  Items are accepted that are clean, current and in good condition.  If you wouldn't wear it, no one else should be wearing it either!

2.  Business, church or dressy items should be kept together to ensure that all pieces find their way to the same recipient. Consider placing them together on a hanger or separately placing items together into a separate bag.

3.  If donating 2 or 3-piece items, please place them together on a hanger or add a note on the bag/box to say how many are in the bag/box.  This helps our sorting process tremendously and we thank you in advance!

4.  Consider more than clothing.  Shoes, purses, belts and ties are additional items that help to complete any outfit.  New makeup is great also.

5.  Work with a group of friends to purchase new items. Nothing can compare to having something that has never been worn before.  New items could include socks, underwear and stockings.  Perhaps hitting up a favorite thrift store to make your dollars stretch!

6.  We cannot accept used undergarments, stuffed animals or shirts with objectionable logos/writing.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it to discuss drop off options.  Do not drop any items off at Patrick Henry HS until you are notified to do so.  Items dropped off at that location prior to our use of the building will be thrown away and will not be available to our intended recipients!

8.  Special items that are particularly requested include plus size items (especially for women), items that can be considered "uniforms" by nature (i.e., white shirts, black pants, coveralls), teen-appropriate clothing and infant wear.

How to Help

1.  Spread the word about our donation needs!  The success of this event is measured by how much we have to offer those in need.  Contact groups, business contacts....anyone with items that would be beneficial.

2.  Volunteer with us.  Our online application form will be posted around May 24, 2010.

3.  Are you a teen who wants community service hours this summer?  A special component of "Got You Covered" will focus on teens helping teens.  Youth will be assigned the role of creating a teen clothing section.  You'll collect, sort, decorate and even help suggest items to our recipients.  Sign ups for this will be included in the online application form.

4.  Consider donating items that will help our event!  We'd love to get temporary storage for items collected from now until the August event.  We can also use any type of hanging clothes apparatus - we'll gladly return items that are available to borrow!

Who Benefits

In collaboration with Hanover County Department of Social Services, The Giving Heart is working to identify those who fall below economic guidelines.  Priority distribution will include approximately 477 families who make less then $300 a month. Upon meeting their needs, the distribution of remaining items will be open to additional economically-challenged individuals and families within Hanover County, neighboring counties, and cities who desire to attend the second distribution event. Potential recipients for the second distribution may include elderly, disabled and others who meet economic guidelines identified as the event approaches.

Attention Nonprofits and Social Service Providers

The Giving Heart will be collaborating with additional nonprofits, as well as social service providers, to offer a resource area

during the "Got You Covered" event.  If you would like to be available to offer information, assistance or awareness, let us know ASAP. Space is limited!
