New Book About Richmond History, by Richmonders
RICHMOND, VIRGINIA—Richmondmom.com Publishing is releasing the first in a series of children’s books about Richmond, Virginia history.
“It’s a dream come true,” says Kate Hall, owner of Richmondmom.com Publishing and the Richmond parenting site, Richmondmom.com. “I’ve always wanted to create something that would entertain children and families, so this is a realization of that dream.”
The book is set in a suburban Richmond home, and begins with three little children dying of boredom until they stumble upon a “treasure” that appears to be a button from the Civil War. The adventure that ensues is a journey through Richmond with their mom, who narrates the book and tells the story of the civil war in the simplest terms for her children:
And mama explained,
the best way she could,
About values and honor
and the forces that would
turn a great country in on itself
And problems that come
with slavery and wealth…
Mama could barely get enough air
To answer the questions of three little ones who cared
About bread riots, uniforms, heroes and war
About what each side thought was worth dying for.
The book’s three little characters are led down Monument Avenue, to the Civil War Museum, past the majestic James River and finally end up at the Jefferson Hotel for high tea.
“We’re really proud that this book is a collaborative effort of several creative Richmonders who added their talents to Richmond Rocks.” Hayes and Fisk, the Art of Photography took amazing photographs, and Knox Hubard illustrated the book beautifully. Writer Nicole Unice helped with the writing and editing of the book, and the publishing was done through Palari Publishing, LLC.
Says Kate, “The entire book was created locally! We couldn’t be more thrilled to share this fun story with all Richmond families and look forward to book readings and signings we’re scheduling throughout the city. We’re especially thankful to our book sponsors who helped make it possible.”
The book is available online through Richmondmom.com, the Palari website, and Amazon.com and select retailers throughout Richmond, VA.
