Just Rydin Magazine
By Founder and Editor of Just Rydin Magazine, Marie Cammock-Payne
Did you ever make a promise and not really expect to keep it? My niece, Ricke, called me one day excited over the prospect of learning to ride a motorcycle. I gave her the encouraging, “You go girrrl!” motto and casually added without any thought, “If you pass the course I will learn too!” Needless to say, several days later I got the call. She screamed into the phone, “Auntie, I passed! I passed!” Mmmmm, I thought, did I not expect her to pass? Why did I tell her I would take the class too?
It was not long before I found myself at the local community college sitting in a classroom with several other students prepped and ready to ride.
The three-day course provides students with indoor class and outdoor road instructions. To make a long story short, our burly motorcycle trainers put us through the ropes and we all passed. Do people fail motorcycle training courses? Sure they do, but whether you pass or fail, you will appreciate learning the basics of motorcycle riding. In fact, the discipline behind riding left an indelible mark on my life, so with relentless support from my husband and a friend, Just Rydin Magazine LLC was born. The magazine published its first edition on April 2009 and five more monthly publications followed. It features riders from all walks of life. Just Rydin also highlights motorcycles. The local appeal of this magazine reaches readers as far as California. We also picked up reader support in DC, Maryland, New Jersey and New York. Worth Higgins is a printing firm right here in Richmond, VA. Their encouragement and valued service boosted us into the magazine publishing market. Back issues are available to those who are interested in reading one.
Due to the high costs of printing a magazine, major sponsors are needed to continue distribution of 500 copies or more. One of our readers, who retired from the government many years ago and does not ride a motorcycle, told us how much she looks forward to each and every edition. This is a huge compliment for our small JR team of event riders, photographers and contributing writers.
Every now and then Ulysses, my husband, has to explain to people that his wife is the one who writes most of the articles and lays out the designs. A sarcastic look of “right” follows and I have to laugh, but overall the support I get from men and women is overwhelming. Women though, in particular, seem to beam when they learn that a female is the founder and editor of Just Rydin Magazine. It is funny how things work out and life’s little ironies come full circle. The ladies push me on with, “You go girrrl!” Yeah, where have I heard that before?
So as I seek sponsors, we plan to keep the magazine alive and focus on the important works motorcyclists contribute to their communities. Oh, and yes—those bikes! Gotta write about the bikes!
